É um dos bagres mais comuns do Pantanal, podendo alcançar até 50 cm de comprimento, embora exemplares desse tamanho sejam muito raros. Os mais comuns têm entre 15 e 20 cm. Tem hábitos noturnos e se alimenta de outros peixes, insetos e restos vegetais. Reproduz-se no leito dos rios, na época das cheias. Os jovens são encontrados em braços mortos ou leitos abandonados de rios que se ligam ao canal principal na época das enchentes. Sua característica principal é o ronco que emite quando é pescado e retirado da água. Deve-se ter muito cuidado com os espinhos endurecidos das nadadeiras, que são verdadeiros ferrões; sua extração das mãos ou pés dos incautos provoca muita dor, porque os ferrões possuem espinhos em sentido contrário.

  This is one of the commonest catfishes of the Pantanal, capable of  reaching up to 50 cm in length, although specimens ofthis size are very rare. The most usual is between 15 and 20 cm. They have nocturnal habits and feed on other fishes, insects and vegetable remains. It reproduces on the riverbeds during periods of flooding. The young ones are found in dead arms permanently or seasonally connected to the main river. Its principal.characteristic is the grunt it makes when it is caught and taken out of the water; care has to be taken with the fins which have hardened spines that are veritable pricks; the extraction of these from the hands or feet of the unwary people can cause considerable pain since the pricks have contrary-wise spines.
