Espécie
muito conhecida em todo o Brasil e muito apreciada pelos
mineiros, que costumam prepará-la de tal forma que suas
espinhas não são percebidas. Mas não é apreciada pelos
pantaneiros. Ocorre em áreas marginais rasas, de águas
paradas, em baías, corixos, vazantes e rios. É um predador de
espreita, que se alimenta de outros peixes que são engolidos
inteiros. As vezes alimenta-se também de pequenos camarões.
Reproduz-se na planície pantaneira, na época das cheias, de
fevereiro a abril/maio, em áreas bem rasas. Possui uma espécie
de cuidado parental, protegendo o "ninho" até a eclosão
dos ovos.

"Traíra"
This
species is known throughout Brazil and is much appreciated by
people from Minas Gerais State who are accustomed to preparing
it in the way that the bones are not realized. But it is not
appreciated by the "pantaneiros", the traditional
people from the Pantanal. It is found in shallow marginal areas
with still water in lagoons, lakes, "corixos",
"vazantes" and rivers. It keeps watching to feed on
other fishes which they swallow whole. They sometimes feed on
small freshwater shrimp. They reproduce in the plain of the
Pantanal at flood time from February to April/May in shallow
waters. They have a special parental care protecting the eggs in
the "nest" until the hatching.
