Piranha
Peixe
carnívoro voraz que se alimenta de outros peixes e mesmo de
outros animais que caiam na água. Os maiores exemplares chegam
a alcançar 50 cm de comprimento e, a olhos desavisados, pode
ser confundido com o pacu. Reproduz-se na época das enchentes
na planície pantaneira, geralmente de fevereiro a abril/maio. A
piranha pequena ocorre em áreas rasas, como beira de rios,
corixos, vazantes e baías, enquanto a grande, em águas mais
profundas. Dizem que o caldo de piranha, prato típico da culinária
corumbaense, é afrodisíaco. Não procede a informação de que
as piranhas aumentaram no Pantanal em virtude da redução da
população de jacarés (considerados grandes predadores de
piranha) na época em que eram caçados. Sua diminuição, de
1960 a 1974, foi devida às pequenas cheias ocorrentes nessa época
e à drástica redução dos ambientes de águas paradas onde as
piranhas vivem..

"Piranha"
This
is a voracious carnivorous fish which eats other fishes and even
other animais that fali into the water. It reaches up to 50 cm
in length and to untrained eyes can be mistaken for the pacu. It
reproduces in the flooding season in the Pantanal plain,
generally from February to April/May. The small pirqnhas are
found in shallow areas such as the edges of rivers, corixos and
lagoons while the large ones live in deeper waters. It is said
that piranha broth, a typical dish of the people of Corumbá is
an aphrodisiac. It is illogical to state that piranhas increased
in number in the Pantanal .as a result of the reduction in the
numbers of caimans(considered great piranha predators) in the
period when they were hunted. Its diminution from 1960 to 1974,
was due to the small floods that occurred in that period and the
drastic reduction in the numberof areas with still waters where
the piranha lives.
