Raia, Arraia

Ocorre nos rios, vazantes, corixos e baías do Pantanal. Alimentam-se de pequenos peixes, crustáceos e moluscos. A raia apresenta fecundação interna e é vivípara; os filhotes já nascem formados. Como característica especial, apresenta um espinho com veneno na região caudal. Existem 3 espécies de raias no Pantanal. É crença popular que se devem arrastar os pés ao entrar em rios e corixos do Pantanal, para que tal movimento afugente as raias e evite as picadas, extremamente dolorosas. É o primeiro peixe a boiar no rio Paraguai quando se inicia o fenômeno da dequada, isto é, mortandade de peixes causada por deficiência de oxigênio na água.

Ray

Rays can be found in rivers, "vazantes", "corixos" and lakes ofthe Pantanal. Differently for almost fishes, they hatch well-formed youngs instead of eggs. As a special characteristic it has a poisonous thorn in its tail. There are three species of rays in the Pantanal. The popular belief is that one should drag our feet on entering the rivers and streams of the Pantanal in the hope that would scare away the rays and so avoid their pricks which are extremely painful. It is the first fish to float in the Paraguay River at the beginning of the "dequada", a natural phe- nomenon offish kill, due to a dissolved oxygen deficiency in the water
